| Getting good, useful product information -
Smart consumers and consumer-oriented stores rely significantly on manufacturer's specs, manufacturer claims, internal testing, external reviews and their customer's feedback when selecting products. Minimally, manufacturers should provide clear and accurate specifications of practical value to consumers to permit well informed comparison shopping. Although some manufacturers systematically evade providing such specs, we think such information should appear in the advertising, on manufacturer's website, and on the product itself. As you may have noticed from our product descriptions and the products we choose to sell, we think this is very important.
Manufacturer specs and claims help to prevent misrepresentation by sellers,
yet manufacturer's information alone is not enough. Although there are many conscientious people who contribute their time to write honest product reviews, there are serious concerns about the proliferation of anonymous, unscientific, biased, sometimes fraudulent online reviewers - who frequently represent specific sellers and manufacturers. It would be nice if Consumer's Union could
conduct professional testing on every product on the market, but only
a relatively few products receive testing with this level of
credibility.
Recommendations from users that you personally know and trust are EXTREMELY useful.
