AccuEvolution cost over time: One non-toxic AccuEvolution 'D' recharged 1000 times delivers 10,000,000 mAh of power (12 kwh). At a rate of  $0.12 per kwh (the national average as of 4/09), the cost of electricity for 1000 recharges is slightly less than $1.44. In other words, an AccuEvolution can deliver all this power at a cost of about $11 for a battery plus $1.44 in electricity. Electricity rates in the US range from about $0.06/kwh in WV to $0.1523/kwh in CA.

BATTERY BASICS

ULTRA LOW SELF DISCHARGE.
AccuEvolutions are well known for their ultra low self discharge rate.

Low Self Discharge is one of the most important and practical attributes of a good rechargeable battery. Minimally, a LSD should self discharge at a rate of around 4% per month at room temperature, and stay charged at least 2 years - without refrigeration.

AccuEvolutions are of the Ultra Low Self Discharge variety, self discharging at around 2% per month at room temperature, and stay charged for several years - without refrigeration. This ultra low self discharge rate translates to far greater readiness, less frequent recharging, less energy waste, less battery wear, and superior longevity.

Non LSDs: This type of NiMH battery loses about 20% of charge within 24 hours of charging, then self discharge at a rate of 15% to 30% per month thereafter. Many are marketed as 'high capacity'. Some are marketed as 'pre-charged'. Batteries marketed to 'retain charge for 12 months' are NOT the LSD type and will require refrigeration to retain charge for a significant time.

If your priority is a battery that COMES charged and STAYS charged, select a NiMH battery with a low discharge rate that you can verify. If the discharge rate is not printed directly on the battery and on the manufacturer's website, watch out.

LITHIUM, ALKALINE, NICAD BATTERIES.

Alkalines are readily available, have a low initial price, have a long shelf life and capacity similar to many NiMH batteries. Major drawbacks are that they lose voltage under load and over time, which has a huge impact on performance.Their high internal resistance translates to heat, high energy waste, fast battery wear, and a tendency to heat and swell when placed under heavy load.. For these and other reasons, alkalines are a poor choice for digital and high drain devices. Being non-rechargeable, alkalines are quite expensive in the long run.

Lithiums are light weight non-rechargeables, available  in AA, AAA,  and '9v' sizes plus 'coin' type batteries. They have more shelf life than alkalines and capacity similar to regular NiMH batteries. AAs and AAAs come in 2 voltages - 1.5 and 3.6;  accidentally placing a 3.6v battery in a device designed for 1.5v can cause severe damage. Their high internal resistance translates to heat, high energy waste, fast battery wear, and a tendency to explode, especially when used in high drain devices. Their high initial voltage may also damage many common devices. Lithiums are also used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, causing the sale of these batteries to be restricted in some places. Lithiums are the most expensive of all non-rechargeable AA, AAA and '9v' size batteries with an important niche in  'coin' and custom shape batteries.

NiCad rechargeables are highly toxic, creating considerable risk for kids, pets and landfills. Although durable, they are difficult to properly recharge. Essentially obsolete, their strengths have been eclipsed by low self discharge, non-toxic, NiMH batteries.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS.

Voltage.
For a variety of reasons, the optimum 'universal' voltage has shifted from 1.5v to about 1.2v  for most devices powered by  D, C, AA, and AA batteries. The optimum 'universal' voltage today is generally 8.4v for devices powered by the size '9v' battery. NiMH rechargeable batteries have adapted to this shift, with virtually all brands (including AccuEvolution) operating at 1.2v or 8.4v. Alkalines start at 1.5v (or 9v), drop under load and fade to zero during discharge. If considering lithiums, please read article above.

Claims regarding storage capacity
Some battery producers, online stores and big box stores overlook the importance of adequate and accurately disclosed storage capacity. People buy batteries to store electricity, and we think the storage capacity should be clearly shown directly on each battery, and on the website of the battery producer. Beware if any of these specs are sub-par, inconsistent or not available from the battery company.

To our knowledge, the highest verifiable capacities for Low Self Discharge NiMH batteries are as follows:
9v = 200 mah; AAA = 800 mah; AA = 2,200 mah; C = 4,500 mah; D - 10,000 mah.

Re-wrapped 'C' and 'D' batteries
Most  Low Self Discharge batteries of this size are actually AAs inserted into a larger case. Such batteries offer considerably less power and capacity  than an AccuEvolution and prone to overheat under heavy load and during recharge.  If it is a 'D' size with a capacity of less than 10,000 mAh OR a 'C' size with less than 4500 mAh, you are coming up short on capacity.

Thinking of using AAs in Size 'C' and 'D' Battery Adapters?
Designers of battery powered devices choose battery size carefully and so should consumers. Consider this before using adapters -

Adapted AAs require more frequent charging, wear out quicker, deplete much faster than high capacity AccuEvolution Cs and Ds.
The actual cost per mAh over time greatly favors high capacity AccuEvolution Cs and Ds.
Adapted AAs generate heat which may warp or melt the adapter and damage your device.

Specs, Weight, Freshness and Brand matter

• Make sure your pre-charged batteries have a very low self discharge rate - some do not. See warnings above.
  
• If the specs are sub-par, or inconsistent, or not clearly advertised, or not  posted on the producer's website, or not printed directly on the battery, don't assume the batteries are up to par or as represented
• Good Low Self Discharge batteries are heavy. If the battery isn't noticeably heavy, it will be noticeably light on capacity.
• Prolonged warehousing may subject battery to heat, cold, and moisture - resulting in concealed damage. BearWobble orders several times monthly, stores at dry/room temperature, and ships only the freshest batteries. Never 2nds, damaged or old overstocked merchandise.
• If it's an AccuLoop or AccuPower Evolution (predecessors to AccuEvolution), it is not fresh merchandise.
• AccuEvolution reliability and performance is proven worldwide. The brands famous for alkaline batteries still have a lot to learn about rechargeables.

Alarms and certain other devices
Rechargeable batteries tend to operate at full voltage until close to the end of their discharge cycle. Consequently, a low-battery alert on any device will not operate for an extended period of time with a rechargeable battery. Three safety considerations -

• When safety is an issue, always buy top quality alarms, devices and batteries.
  
• Never use any type of battery against the recommendation of the manufacturer of your alarm or device.
• Low battery voltage or defective batteries could impair your device. Regardless of the battery you use, your first line of defense should not be a low-battery indicator. You should inspect your devices and the batteries in them regularly (at least twice annually) to insure all batteries are properly installed and charged, and each device is functioning properly.

So called 'Hybrids'
There is no such thing as a part NiMH battery and part lithium, or part NiMH battery and part alkaline, or  part lithium and part alkaline. This is purely marketing. If marketed as a 'hybrid', you should check the specs on the battery and on the battery company website to determine what the actual battery chemistry is  - alkaline, NiMH, lithium, or lithium ion. The actual chemistry is significant to proper use, general safety and overall quality. These specs should also clearly reveal the storage capacity, voltage, self discharge rate and proper charging rates (standard and fast).

Ingestion
